It has been an decade now since the Indian Family started doing R & D for naming a baby.
Back to the days I remember, on 11th or 19th or any auspicious day the naming ceremony will be fixed by the family elders. Mostly Baby's mom's wishes to name her baby wont get fulfilled. The politics between in-laws and new mom will be in peak during this time. 90% time, mom will / can be just a spectator.
I remember few of cousin's naming reason.
When I was expecting a brother, I got a sister. That was at the age of 4, I wanted a boy to play with and wished to name him Karthik. (God fulfilled that wish almost 20 years later ). Same time, I got a cousin. My grandma tried to name my cousin Karthik. I started making tantrums and people took my word final and gave him a different name. Ofcourse, they still adhered to their wish of naming him with God's Namakaranams.
My Grandmother was in Tirupathi during a birth of a cousin. So he was named with one of the thousand names of Venkatachalapathy.
Next cousin name reasoning is related to Sabarimala.
Girls in our family mostly got named same or related to the birth-star name, they were born in.
Every name had a reason and every reason had a valid argument.
What did I do? One of the pre condition for the marriage was to name my baby Kaarthik if I get a Son. (Added a 'A' to make it unique) . Second baby I left the choice to my better half. 50- 50 . I name one , You name one.
I have seen my cousins and friends do so much research in the names. Every name they gave / decided had a meaning and had a strong reason. The baby who bought happiness was named with related name. Goddess name in modern formats. The big difference today it is mostly decided by mother. May be my aunts thought let their DIL's get the rights which they were denied as moms.
End of the day, it is the name we give to our babies remain with them life long.
Easy Name with less option of bullying is always parent's choice today.
Whatever Name it is , as per today's trend, we want them to be unique. Not Next Newton or Next Einstein.
We wish them to be FIRST "#NAME#".
